China urges UN states not to attend Xinjiang event hosted by Germany, US and UK. The ambassadors of the US, Germany and Britain are due to address the virtual UN event on Wednesday, along with the Human Rights Watch executive director, Ken Roth, and the Amnesty secretary general, Agnes Callamard. “It is a politically-motivated event,” China’s UN mission wrote in the note, dated Thursday. “We request your mission NOT to participate in this anti-China event.” The Guardian, Reuters, 9 May
WHO approves first Chinese Covid vaccine for emergency use. It is the first vaccine of any kind made in China to receive emergency use authorisation from the WHO, and will now be added to the Covax scheme. The Guardian, FT, 7 May

China refutes Belgian politician’s ‘baseless’ claim about Chinese spies gaining access to Alibaba’s logistics hub at Liege Airport. Belgian Justice Minister Vincent Van Quickenborne told a parliamentary committee that the Cainiao logistics hub may allow access to “sensitive areas”of the air terminal to Chinese intelligence services.
