US and Australia revoke visas for Chinese students and academics deemed security risk. The US has revoked the visas for more than 1,000 Chinese students and researchers deemed security risks, while Australia cancelled the visas of two high-profile academics. Amid heightened tensions over visas, the Chinese foreign ministry yesterday demanded an explanation from Australia over an alleged raid of the residences of four Chinese journalists in June. Germany debates China policy ahead of EU talks. German lawmakers held a debate in the Bundestag yesterday to discuss a realistic EU-China policy before next week’s talks between Angela Merkel and Xi Jinping. While there was a general consensus that the EU should leverage its strength to challenge China on human rights violations, the German government showed little appetite for ‘decoupling’. Authorities quash Inner Mongolia protests. Students in Inner Mongolia have returned to school with new state-written textbooks after China clamped down on protests. Measures included the threat of disciplinary action for parents in government jobs if their children did not return to school. FT, 10 September
